Short answer: The best time of year to visit China is spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October), when most regions are mild, with less rain than in summer. Avoid Golden Week (October 1-7, 2026), the May 1 holiday and Chinese New Year (February 6, 2027), when the whole country travels at once.
These months suit almost every first trip to Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and Hangzhou.
⚠️ Verify before you go: China's public holidays are set every year by the State Council. The dates below come from the published 2026 schedule and the lunar date of the 2027 New Year; mainland China's official 2027 holiday schedule had not been released as of October 1, 2026. The weather table is indicative, not a forecast.
Which months are best, and which should you avoid?
April-May and September-October are best; my favourite window is October 8 to mid-November, after Golden Week, when autumn skies are clear. Avoid Golden Week, the May 1 holiday and the two to three weeks around Chinese New Year.
| Period | My rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-March to late April | Very good | Spring blossoms in Hangzhou and Shanghai |
| May 1-5, 2026 | Avoid | Labour Day holiday in China |
| May 10 to early June | Good | Holiday over, warm; the south turns rainy |
| July-August | Fair | School holidays, humid heat, storms |
| September up to the 20th | Very good | Schools back, heat easing |
| October 1-7, 2026 | Avoid at all costs | Golden Week, busiest week of the year |
| October 8 to mid-November | Best | Clear autumn skies, golden leaves in Beijing |
| December to February | Depends | North is very cold; New Year is packed |
Lonely Planet also ranks spring and autumn as the best seasons.
What is the weather like by region and month?
Each region has its own best months: Beijing and Xi'an are best in April-May and September-November, while Guangzhou in the south is most comfortable from October to December. This table is my indicative rating from general climate patterns (Good = pleasant, Fair = doable, Poor = hot, cold or wet).
| Month | Beijing, Xi'an (north) | Shanghai, Hangzhou (east) | Chengdu, Chongqing (south-west) | Zhangjiajie | Guangzhou (south) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | Poor (very cold, dry) | Fair (damp cold) | Fair (grey) | Poor (cold, possible ice) | Fair (cool) |
| Feb | Poor | Fair | Fair | Poor | Fair (New Year rush) |
| Mar | Fair (windy) | Good | Good | Fair (mist, drizzle) | Fair (humid) |
| Apr | Good | Good (blossoms) | Good | Fair-Good (mist, showers) | Fair |
| May | Good (not May 1-5) | Good | Good | Fair (rains start) | Fair (hot) |
| Jun | Fair | Fair (plum rains) | Fair | Poor (wet) | Poor |
| Jul | Poor (hot, storms) | Poor (hot, typhoons) | Poor (Chongqing scorching) | Fair | Poor |
| Aug | Poor | Poor | Poor | Fair | Poor |
| Sep | Good | Fair-Good | Fair-Good | Good | Fair |
| Oct | Very good (not Oct 1-7) | Very good | Good | Very good (clear skies) | Good |
| Nov | Good | Good | Good | Good | Very good |
| Dec | Poor (cold) | Fair | Fair | Poor | Good |
Two field tips: in Zhangjiajie, spring mist is magical but can hide everything, and in winter some trails or cable cars may close because of ice (check the scenic area's notices). In Guangzhou, October to December is the sweet spot; in 2026 the autumn Canton Fair runs from October 15 to November 4 (cantonfair.org.cn), when the city is much busier, so skip those weeks unless you are attending. Should you avoid Golden Week in China?
Yes, if your dates are flexible. According to the 2026 holiday schedule published by the State Council, China is off from October 1 to 7, 2026, with make-up working days on Sunday, September 20 and Saturday, October 10. Hundreds of millions of people travel at the same time.
Trains sell out, hotels raise prices, sights hit booking caps: leave before September 20 or push back to after October 8.
Is the May 1 holiday a good time to visit China?
No: it is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. In 2026, the Labour Day break runs from May 1 to 5, with a make-up working day on Saturday, May 9 (same official source). If you are flying in from Vietnam, note that it overlaps almost entirely with the Vietnamese April 30 - May 1 holiday. If that is your only option, book trains and timed entries the moment they open, pick refundable hotels and start sightseeing early.
When is Chinese New Year 2027?
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027, with New Year's Eve on February 5 (per the Hong Kong government's 2027 holidays list). Mainland China's exact days off had not been published as of October 1, 2026. Expect two to three weeks of "chunyun", the Spring Festival travel rush, when trains and domestic flights are very hard to book.
Do visa rules depend on your passport?
Yes, and it matters for timing. Vietnamese passport holders need a visa, best applied for about a month before departure: see my China visa guide. French ordinary passport holders can enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days until December 31, 2026, according to France Diplomatie. Other nationalities should check their own rules, including the 240-hour visa-free transit. For season-sensitive budgets, see China travel costs, and for a first route, the 10-day itinerary.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time of year to visit China?
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the best times for most first trips covering Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and Hangzhou: mild temperatures and less rain than summer. My favourite window runs from late September to mid-November, skipping the National Day holiday from October 1 to 7.
Should I avoid Golden Week in China?
Yes, if your dates are flexible. In 2026, China's National Day holiday runs from October 1 to 7. High-speed trains sell out, hotel prices rise and major sights hit their booking limits. Travel before September 20 or from around October 8 instead; a one-week shift makes a huge difference.
When is Chinese New Year 2027?
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027, with New Year's Eve on February 5. Mainland China's official 2027 holiday schedule had not been published as of October 1, 2026. Expect two to three weeks of very heavy travel demand around that date, with trains and domestic flights hard to book.
Is it OK to visit China in July and August?
It works, but it is not ideal for a first trip. July and August are Chinese school holidays, so famous sights are crowded, and many regions are hot and humid with heavy rain and occasional typhoons. If summer is your only option, book early and sightsee early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
Is the May 1 holiday a good time to visit China?
No. In 2026 China takes a five-day Labour Day break from May 1 to 5, with a make-up working day on Saturday, May 9. It is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Aim for mid-April or the period after May 10 to enjoy spring without the domestic holiday crowds.
