Short answer: Plan 3 to 4 days in Guangzhou: a dim sum breakfast, a day for Shamian Island, Chen Clan Academy and Shangxiajiu Street, and an evening at the 600 m Canton Tower with a Pearl River cruise. October to December is the most comfortable; in 2026, skip October 15 to November 4 unless you are attending the Canton Fair.

Guangzhou (广州), the old Canton, is southern China's great food and trade city, known for dim sum, wholesale markets and the Canton Fair. It is also the closest big Chinese city to Vietnam, roughly 2 hours by air from Hanoi (estimate). Updated October 2026.

Do you need a visa for Guangzhou?

It depends on your passport: French ordinary passports are visa-free for up to 30 days until 31/12/2026, nationals of 57 countries can use the 240-hour visa-free transit when travelling on to a third country or region, and everyone else needs a tourist L visa.

  • 240-hour visa-free transit: open to nationals of 57 countries who travel on to a third country or region, through designated ports (en.nia.gov.cn). Hong Kong counts as a separate region, so a route such as Hanoi → Guangzhou → Hong Kong can qualify. Vietnam joined the list on 20 August 2026 (NIA notice).
  • French ordinary passports: visa-free for up to 30 days until 31/12/2026 (France Diplomatie).
  • Everyone else: a tourist L visa. See our China visa guide and 240-hour transit guide.

What is there to do in Guangzhou?

The five classic sights are Canton Tower, Shamian Island, a Pearl River night cruise, Chen Clan Academy and Shangxiajiu Street; together they fill one day and one evening.

  • Canton Tower (广州塔): 600 m tall; go at sunset to see it light up. Prices depend on the observation level.
  • Shamian Island (沙面): colonial-era villas and old banyan trees, free to wander, best in the morning.
  • Pearl River night cruise (珠江夜游): both banks and the tower lit up. Piers and prices vary by route.
  • Chen Clan Academy (陈家祠): an ancestral hall with superb Lingnan wood, stone and ceramic carving.
  • Shangxiajiu Street (上下九): arcaded "qilou" buildings and Cantonese snacks.

Locals speak Cantonese; English is limited outside hotels.

What should you eat in Guangzhou?

Start with dim sum at a morning "yum cha" (饮早茶), the Cantonese tea ritual: har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai, cheung fun (肠粉, rice rolls), char siu bao, chicken feet in black bean sauce and egg tarts. Beyond dim sum, try roast goose, char siu and double-skin milk (双皮奶).

My tip: arrive around 7-8am at a historic teahouse such as Guangzhou Restaurant (广州酒家) or Taotaoju (陶陶居); local families queue at weekends. Many places add a per-person tea charge, which is normal. Budget roughly 100 to 200 yuan for two (my estimate). Cantonese food is mild, the opposite of Sichuan; compare with our Chengdu guide.

Where are the wholesale clothing markets in Guangzhou?

The two best known are Baima Clothing Market (白马服装市场), next to Guangzhou Railway Station, and Shisanhang (十三行) in Liwan District.

  • Baima: mid- to upper-range clothing.
  • Shisanhang: cheaper clothing, very busy.

Go in the morning (check hours ahead), expect minimum quantities per style, and sort out customs rules and shipping before you buy in bulk.

When is the Canton Fair in autumn 2026?

The 140th Canton Fair runs in three phases: October 15-19, October 23-27 and October 31 to November 4, 2026, at the Pazhou (琶洲) exhibition complex, according to the official site. The China Import and Export Fair is held twice a year, in spring around April-May and in autumn around October-November, each session in three phases by product category.

Spring 2027 (141st session): as of October 5, 2026, the organisers had not published official dates. Do not lock in flights on dates posted by third-party sites; wait for the announcement on cantonfair.org.cn, where buyers also pre-register online.

⚠️ During the fair, Guangzhou is much busier. Book early, stay near a metro line to Pazhou, and recheck each phase's dates before buying flights.

How do you get to Guangzhou, get around and pay?

Fly into Baiyun Airport (CAN), use the metro, and set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you leave home.

  • Arrival: Baiyun Airport (CAN) connects to the centre by metro and taxi. Flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are frequent; schedules change by season. Overland from Vietnam is possible via the Lao Cai-Hekou or Huu Nghi-Pingxiang borders and onward trains, but it takes a full day or more (estimate) and needs a visa.
  • Metro: dense, cheap, with English signs; DiDi works well for groups.
  • Payments: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your Visa or Mastercard before you fly; a 3% fee may apply above 200 yuan (nsd.mofcom.gov.cn). See our Alipay and WeChat Pay guide.
  • Cash: keep 1,000-2,000 yuan as backup; 20,000 yuan or more must be declared (en.thnet.gov.cn).

Can you combine Guangzhou with Shenzhen and Hong Kong?

Yes. High-speed trains from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North take about 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the service (estimate); book on 12306.cn. Hong Kong also has direct high-speed trains but separate entry rules (immd.gov.hk): crossing to Hong Kong means leaving the mainland, so returning counts as a new entry and a single-entry visa will not cover it.

How much does a trip to Guangzhou cost?

My estimate: about 1,200 to 2,000 yuan per person for 4 days on a budget, or 2,300 to 4,400 yuan in comfort, sharing a double room and excluding flights.

When is the best time to visit Guangzhou?

October to December is usually the driest and most comfortable period (estimate based on climate). Spring is very humid, and summer is hot and rainy, with typhoons possible.

In 2026, unless you are attending the fair, avoid Golden Week (October 1-7) and the autumn Canton Fair (October 15 to November 4), when the city is much busier; November 5 to the end of December is the easiest window. See best time to visit China.
