Short answer: yes. Tourists can link a foreign Visa or Mastercard to Alipay, or to WeChat Pay, with their passport and pay by QR code almost everywhere, with no Chinese bank account. Payments up to 200 RMB are fee-free; above that, Alipay charges 3% on the whole amount. I ask every traveller to set up both apps and carry 1,000 to 2,000 RMB in cash as a backup.

⚠️ Check before you go: fees, limits and promotions change regularly. Figures below were checked on 1 October 2026. Look at the fee line shown in the app before confirming a payment, and ask your bank about its foreign transaction fee.

Can tourists use Alipay with a foreign credit card?

Yes. China's official payment guide for overseas visitors (11 April 2024) confirms that foreign users can link international cards, including Visa and Mastercard, to Alipay and WeChat Pay. The same guide raised the limits to 5,000 USD per transaction and 50,000 USD per year, and requires hotels of 3 stars and above and 4A/5A attractions to accept bank cards.

For my Vietnamese travellers: Visa Vietnam announced on 22 December 2023 that Vietnamese-issued Visa cards link to Alipay and Weixin Pay. A domestic-only card with just the Napas logo will not work.

Most failures come from the card issuer, not the app. Turn on international and online payments in your banking app before you fly.

How do I set up Alipay before my trip?

Six steps, best done at home while your phone still receives your bank's SMS codes:

  1. Download Alipay (the international version) from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Sign up with your home phone number and the SMS code.
  3. Verify your identity with your passport.
  4. Add your card: number, expiry date, CVV, cardholder name exactly as printed.
  5. Confirm the 3D Secure step from your bank.
  6. On arrival, test a small purchase under 200 RMB, like a bottle of water.

To pay, tap Scan to scan the merchant's QR code, or Pay to show yours. The amount is charged straight to your card, so there is no balance to top up. Person-to-person transfers are limited with foreign cards.

Can foreigners use WeChat Pay with an international credit card?

Yes. Tencent says international visitors can set up Weixin Pay with a passport and an international card: Me → Services (Pay) → Wallet → Cards. Create the WeChat account a few days before departure, as new accounts sometimes need verification by another user.

According to the Beijing municipal portal on 26 March 2026, WeChat Pay:

  • waives the 3% fee on every international card payment under 200 RMB;
  • gives first-time card users a full waiver on payments under 1,000 RMB for 60 consecutive days, saving up to 30 RMB per transaction;
  • accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, Diners Club and UnionPay.

The length of the new-user offer has varied between announcements, so check the payment screen.

Do I need both Alipay and WeChat Pay?

You can get by with one, but I tell every traveller to set up both: Alipay as the main wallet, WeChat Pay as the backup you will have anyway for messaging hotels and restaurants. If one wallet or card is declined, you switch in seconds.

How much is the 3% fee in practice?

With Alipay, once a payment goes over 200 RMB, the 3% applies to the whole amount, not just the part above 200 (MOFCOM).

BillWallet fee
150 RMB (dinner for two)0
500 RMB (family entry tickets)15 RMB
1,500 RMB (two hotel nights)45 RMB

Your bank may add its own foreign transaction fee on top. For hotel bills, I suggest paying by card at the terminal to skip the wallet's 3%.

Should I bring cash to China or is everything cashless?

Bring some. QR payments cover almost everything, but cash is your backup.

I suggest 1,000 to 2,000 RMB per person for 5 to 10 days. That is my own field estimate, not a rule: cash covers deposits or a dead phone. Carrying 20,000 RMB or more in cash, or foreign cash worth 5,000 USD or more, must be declared to customs on entry and exit (Baiyun Airport customs guidance, 30 March 2026). In China you can withdraw RMB at ATMs showing the Visa or Mastercard logo, or exchange at bank counters with a currency exchange sign.

What if a payment fails?

  1. Pick a second card or switch to the other app.
  2. Open your banking app to approve a blocked payment, which means keeping a SIM or connection that receives your bank's SMS or notifications.
  3. Pay by card at the terminal or in cash.

Bring two cards from different banks. For the bigger picture, see how much a China trip costs and the China visa guide.
