Short answer: in 2026 a private guide in China costs roughly 50-120 USD per day for a licensed English-speaking guide on guiding alone, and roughly 800-1,650 CNY per 8-hour day for a Vietnamese-speaking guide. Add a private car and driver and the daily total climbs fast. Tickets, meals and the guide's travel costs are rarely included.
I'm a private guide in China speaking Vietnamese, English and Mandarin. The prices, rules and traps below apply to anyone hiring a guide.
⚠️ Verify before you go: these are market prices from public rate cards (see Sources), not my rates. They vary by city, season, group size and exchange rate. Updated 1 October 2026.
Private guide prices in China (2026)
| Service | Typical price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed English-speaking guide, guiding only | 50-120 USD/day | nebulatrip.com |
| Local guide, 8 h, up to 5 guests | from 800 CNY/day | hdvlocal.com |
| Vietnamese-speaking private guide, Beijing, 8 h | 180-220 USD/day | dulichchina.com |
| Hourly (Beijing) | 35-40 USD/h, 4 h minimum | dulichchina.com |
| Remote help (tickets, taxis, translation) | from 300 CNY/day | hdvlocal.com |
| Fully private tour (guide, car, hotels, tickets) | 150-300 USD/person/day | chinafantasytravel.com |
Vietnamese travellers can convert at 1 CNY ≈ 3,930 VND (1 October 2026): 800-1,650 CNY is about 3.1-6.5 million VND per day.
The detail that matters most is the unit. Day guides charge per group; packaged tours charge per person. Four people sharing a 200 USD guide pay 50 USD each.
What's not included in the price?
According to public rate cards, these are often extra:
- The guide's meals: either they eat with you or it's about 100 CNY per meal.
- The guide's room on overnight trips: at least 250-300 CNY per night in big cities.
- Overtime past 8 hours: 150-200 CNY per hour at one provider.
- Extra guests: one provider adds 100 CNY per person per day from the 6th guest.
- Car and driver, priced by vehicle and distance; out-of-town days cost more.
- Entrance tickets, cable cars, shuttles, plus the guide's train fares on multi-city trips.
- Tips: optional; one source suggests 10-15% or 20-30 USD per day.
One provider says prices can rise 20-30% in peak season; treat that as a single-source estimate. My tip: compare the total cost for the whole group and trip. A 900 CNY/day guide plus car, room and meals can cost more than a 1,400 CNY/day quote that includes the car.
Should you hire a private guide in China?
Not every day. A guide earns their fee on:
- Beijing: the Forbidden City (timed tickets, passport scans, crowds, a huge site) and the Great Wall. See my Beijing guide.
- Xi'an: the Terracotta Warriors, outside the city. See Xi'an.
- Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang: many transfers, park shuttles and cable cars, signage mostly in Chinese.
- Travelling with elderly parents or young kids: slower pace, rest stops, milder food.
- Business or sourcing trips: hire a business interpreter (from 1,200 CNY/day at hdvlocal).
In Shanghai or Hangzhou, if you're comfortable with map apps, Alipay and a translation app, you can manage on your own most of the time. See Shanghai and Hangzhou. For a first trip, the sweet spot is usually a guide on 3-4 hard days and self-guided days in between. For the overall budget, see how much a China trip costs.
How to choose a trustworthy guide
- Guide card: a card number (导游证号) you can check on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism guide lookup; a 2025 electronic guide card was announced on 13 June 2025. If someone is an unlicensed "interpreter-companion", ask directly.
- Real identity and one video call before any deposit.
- Written quote: hours, guests, car, tickets, guide's expenses, cancellation terms.
- Day-by-day itinerary, no vague lines.
- Verifiable reviews, and ask: "Are there any shopping stops?"
Beware of "zero-fee" tours and shopping stops
A tour cheaper than flights plus hotels, with a jade, tea, silk or herbal-medicine shop every day, is illegal in China. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism notice on Article 35 of the Tourism Law targets "零负团费" (zero-fee and negative-fee) tours and states that:
- tours may not be organised at unreasonably low prices, and travellers may not be lured or deceived;
- designated shopping or paid extras require a written contract, agreed voluntarily;
- operators may not earn kickbacks from designated shops.
Red flags: prices far below the table, no written quote, 100% upfront, a "free" visit to a "jade factory".
Do you need a visa?
It depends on your passport. Vietnamese passports need a visa: see China visa for Vietnamese citizens and whether the 240-hour visa-free transit applies. French ordinary passports are visa-free for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, per France Diplomatie. Other nationalities should check the current rules for their own passport.
What about my rates?
I accompany groups of 1-8 guests in Vietnamese, English or Mandarin, and can also plan the whole trip. I don't publish a daily rate: I quote per trip, itemising what's included. See my services or request a quote.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a private guide in China cost per day?
Based on public 2026 rate cards, a licensed English-speaking guide costs roughly 50-120 USD per day for guiding only. A Vietnamese-speaking guide costs roughly 800-1,650 CNY for an 8-hour day, and 180-220 USD in Beijing at one provider. A private car and driver, entrance tickets, and the guide's meals and lodging are usually charged on top.
Is a China guide priced per person or per group?
Day guides are almost always priced per group, so a family of four splits one daily rate. Fully arranged private tours that bundle guide, car, hotels and tickets are priced per person, commonly around 150-300 USD per person per day. Always confirm the unit before comparing two quotes, because the difference is large for families.
What is usually not included in a private guide's price in China?
Typically excluded: car and driver, entrance and cable car tickets, your meals, the guide's meals (about 100 CNY per meal at one provider), the guide's hotel room on overnight trips (250-300 CNY per night in big cities), overtime beyond 8 hours (150-200 CNY per hour) and tips. Ask for a written, itemised quote.
How do I check that a Chinese tour guide is licensed?
A licensed guide in China has a tour guide card number (导游证号). You can enter it on the official guide lookup page of China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism at mct.gov.cn and check that the name matches. Also ask for ID, a written contract and an itemised quote before paying any deposit.
Are cheap China tours with shopping stops legal?
Not when the price is unreasonably low. Article 35 of China's Tourism Law bans organising tours at unreasonably low prices and earning kickbacks from designated shops. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism issued a notice to stamp out zero-fee and negative-fee tours. Any designated shopping must be agreed voluntarily in a written contract, and you can refuse.
